Brisbane based band “1989” has been described as “In your face, balls to the wall, old school rock.” In late 2006, 22 year old singer Simon Vermeulen, 20 year old bassist; Jason Fuller, and 18 year old guitarist; Thomas Sheldrake got together playing an 80’s rock sound, with a more modernized feel. Since the boys are all influenced by that distinctive sound of 80’s rock, they decided to call the band 1989, because that year signified the end of 80’s rock. The boys of 1989 are still living in that decade! As they progressed over the weeks and months, they started to get more involved in their music, and thought there was something missing. Since there was only the three of them, they felt that they needed the help of another guitarist, and a drummer, considering Simon, an ex-drummer of 7 years, had pulled double duties, by drumming and singing. A second guitarist was the easiest to locate, as Simon had a work colleague at the time, who was a guitarist. Once asked by Simon, 32 year old Mark Haddon accepted the roll of rhythm guitarist. Locating a drummer was a different story. After many months of ads and auditions, the boys were getting doubtful of ever finding one. But then out of the blue, 21 year old drummer Steve Tyssen answered an add in the local musicians classifieds. He came for an audition and right then and there the boys knew that he was the drummer for them. He was asked to join the band, and gladly accepted. The band have been practicing and writing songs ever since in their very own rehearsal room - a local tyre shop in Redcliffe. Now with a stable and talented 5 member line up and a 6 track demo recorded in a shed, the boys of 1989 are ready to venture out and play a kick ass live show. So look out for them at a gig near you in the future.
