Smilers, Mann delivers on the promise she showed on Magnolia Soundtrack's captivating "Save Me". The hazy rumble beneath the loose acoustic jangle of "Freeway" adds to its melodic chill. The down on your luck lyrics and hard-to-shake hook, "You got a lot of money / But you can't afford the freeway", hint at a struggle with drug addiction. Mann's rich vocals add warmth and hope to the desperate tale, which is a recurring theme on the album. Shuffling acoustic ballad "Phoenix", about knowing when to get out of a relationship, succeeds largely because her matter-of-fact vocals sound so at peace. Her cold, clinical look at things, "It's hard to know when to cut and run / You balance heartache with your fun / And when the scales tip, you know you're done", matches her melodic, calming voice. She never directly scolds her subjects, but lyrics like, "And you'll call it fate / When you show up too late", dish out plenty of brutal truth on string fuelled piano ballad "It's Over". Things are not always quite so melancholy, but there is rarely a ray of sunshine in this set examining with the rough side of life. With so many songwriters delivering one-note love fests, it is refreshing to hear an artist taking a stab at the everyday struggles, like accepting that your life may have fallen short of your dreams on the swirling "Thirty One Today". The jazzed-up horn and organ backing of "Medicine Wheel" serves as a fine setting for the story of a mother's decision to put her son on medicine to calm him; "He came home crying / And there's your proof / Crying 'bout nothing but a missing tooth / I did the right thing". When she does take on love, with "True Believer", she delivers a deliciously melodic hook, "I want you / But you're a poltergeist / I want you / But, baby, the price is high", making you fall head over heels for the jagged, sultry ballad. With @#%&*! Smilers, Aimee Mann delivers a fantastic album full of timeless melodic guitar pop gems. It is the kind of album that helps explain the resurgence of the vinyl album sales, sounding more at home with classic LPs than on your iPod.
