  Another honor for Al! The 45th annual Bal Africain, one of Detroit's premier fundraising events, will be held Aug. 2 at the Detroit Institute of Arts. This year's gala will celebrate the theme, "Jazz: An African American Art Form," by honoring jazz legend Al Jarreau. Attendees can also enjoy a VIP reception with Jarreau, dinner, a silent auction and the Cool Jazz Bal Africain After-Dark party, or just attend the after-party from 8:30-9:30 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the museum's Friends of...   I have been a fan of Al Jarreau since I was maybe 16. I remember playing Boogie Down in my first car! I also remember sneaking into see him at Mud Island in Memphis in 1984 and also when he sang the scat in Boogie Down TO ME backstage here in Park City at the Jazz Fest in 2002. I am still amazed that I got to meet him, much less have him put his hand on my shoulder and scat face to face with me. I just found this pic and had to share.

  I love Al's music. There's not much he's done that i dont have in my collection. From High Crime to All I Got is amazing. His voice and performance is definitely one of a kind!

  I saw Al a few years back in The Hammersmith Apollo in London, UK. The great thing about his voice and artists of this caliber is that they are so perfect both live and recorded.
