Joe Nichols brings his traditional sound to the Fulton County Fair

    By BRIAN DUGGER
    BLADE STAFF WRITER

"Real Things" is possibly the best body of work Joe Nichols has ever produced.

Released last year, Nichols' fourth major album was universally praised by critics. It was a classic, neo-traditional Nichols record put together by two of the best producers in Nashville, Brent Rowan and Mark Wright.

The only problem is that critical acclaim and commercial success aren't necessarily intertwined, and "Real Things" failed to score with his fans. After going platinum with "Man with a Memory" and gold with "III," Nichols hasn't come close to achieving that type of success with "Real Things." While he piled up seven Top-10 singles with his previous albums, the two singles off his fourth album barely cracked the Top 20, and Nichols admits the man to blame is the one staring back at him each morning when he looks in the mirror.

"There are a million different places I could point a finger, but ultimately, the blame lies with me," he says. "With the personal issues I had last year and my lack of focus I had before that, it's all the direct result."

Those personal issues involved a battle with substance abuse and drinking that got progressively worse after the death of his father, Mike, in 2002. His struggles landed him in rehab in October. A person battling addiction is never cured, but Nichols believes he's headed in the right direction after his stay in rehab.

"It's gotten me more focused. I'm more focused than I ever have been, and that's what was needed."

That focus is evident when he talks about his upcoming one-year wedding anniversary. He and his wife, Heather, were married on Sept. 9 in Savannah, Ga.
"We have a quiet getaway planned, but it won't even last a day since we have a lot of work we have to get back to."

The short trip is no indication of his commitment to his marriage. Heather is his best friend, and he credits her with helping him through his issues. The pair have known each other since they were 18 but only began dating seriously about two years ago.

"She's a trouper. I'm a lucky man that she's still here. When you go through a lot of stuff like I did, it's easy for a person not to want to be strong. She was my strength when I wanted to be weak. She propped me up and gave me a kick and told me, ‘Now you've got to go do this.' And I've got to give her thanks for that."

Nichols' fans should look for Heather's influence on his next album, whether it's a love song to her or just him writing about feelings she drew out of him.

"She's always involved in what I do, whether she knows it or not," Nichols says.
In between dates on the road, Nichols has been pouring himself into his upcoming album, hoping to recapture that elusive commercial success he achieved when he hit country radio with "The Impossible" back in 2002. Nichols followed up that top-five hit with "Brokenheartsville," which became his first No. 1 single in March, 2003. Several other hits followed, including "Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off," which was Nichols' second chart-topper.

Although "Another Side of You" and "It Ain't No Crime" didn't become big hits when he released them off his last album, he thinks he's on the right track. A new single should be on radio in late September or early October.

"I don't think we need to change much on the product side. I feel it was a great album. So many things contributed to the lack of commercial success, but you can't look at the music and say it wasn't commercially appealing. I think if I sing good country songs, everything will be OK."

Fans attending his show in Wauseon Monday night should expect to hear some new music. He uses his concert crowds as a barometer for how a song might do on radio. More than anything, fans should expect to hear that traditional Nichols sound.

"It's a country show, with the exception of about two minutes when I throw in a little goofiness. I want to make sure people get their money's worth and they leave happy and want to come back to the next show."

Joe Nichols and Jake Owen will be in concert at the Fulton County Fair in Wauseon on Monday at 7:30 p.m. Track seats are $22, and grandstand seats are $18 and $20. Tickets can be purchased online at www.fultoncountyfair.com at the fairgrounds, or by phone at 419-335-7469.

    GAC's CMA Celebrity Close Up

A Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words -- It was a challenge to keep a straight face when Joe Nichols dropped in on Lorianne Crook and GAC's CMA Celebrity Close Up series, which airs July 26th at 9 pm ET.  Among other serious topics, Nichols complains that his wife Heather's horse is a "pretty boy with an ego," and cracks more jokes than the audience can keep up with. When not doing his stand up routine, Nichols can be found on tour throughout the summer, performing hits from his latest CD Real Things.  Check www.joenichols.com for dates in your area.
