The Cinematics have broken through as one of 2007’s most acclaimed new bands. Hailing from Glasgow, Scotland the band elicits the cold, grey, stark and sometimes austere side of life in the North. Powered by tight grooves that demand movement and passionate, powerful and thoughtful vocals, The Cinematics also bring emotion and warmth. The end result is music that transcends any trends or underground niche. The Cinematics came together when Scott, who had recently dropped out of University, was busking on the streets of Glasgow to make ends meet. This is where his future bandmates, guitarist Ramsay Miller and bassist Adam Goemanns discovered him. The band was soon fleshed out with drummer Ross Bonney. They began gigging locally and regularly and by chance were discovered by TVT Records. A deal was soon inked and the band began touring the UK with the likes of Snow Patrol, Editors, We Are Scientists and their new label mates Ambulance LTD. Two singles, “Chase” and “Break” began to impact and the buzz began to trickle over to the United States. This led to the band coming over for the 2006 South By Southwest festival and a handful of small shows in New York City which seemingly set off an alarm in the blog community that a great new band had arrived. The band spent the remainder of the year crafting their first album with producers Simon “Barny” Barnicott and the legendary Stephen Hague (New Order.) The resulting music helped the band grab heavy critics support in advance of its stateside release, including from Nylon magazine who said that “The Cinematics want to make you dance, and A Strange Education certainly will… the songs are carefree but earnest, smart but unpretentious, and about as fun as pop music should be.” The band was also coveted by SPIN whose feature on the band in their February 2007 issue declared them a “Breaking Out” artist. With plenty of music fans having read about them, The Cinematics came to America to answer their hype live on stage, and results are speaking for themselves. A Strange Eduction was released in March, right on top of the band’s first national tour supporting MuteMath. The shows sell out virtually in every city. The tour brings them back to South By Southwest where they made a triumphant splash just 12 months prior. Playing as many as three shows a day during the conference, an amazing thing happened when an exhausted Scott and Ramsay showed up for an acoustic performance at the Austin Convention Center. Closing their set with a cover of Jeff Buckley’s “Grace”, nothing could have prepared them to find out Buckley’s mother, Mary Guilbert happened to be in the audience and was brought to tears by the emotional performance. "I fell completely silent and just stared for a while," Scott told Spinner.com of meeting Jeff’s mom. "I tried to say something about the profound impact her son's music had had on my life, but I just mumbled something fairly incoherent. I can't really remember what she said. Someone told me she said something about [our cover] being one of the most beautiful interpretations of her son's music she'd heard." Leaving Austin it becomes quite clear to The Cinematics and everyone around them that the band is making a national impact on the music scene. The band is now in the middle of a sell-out headlining tour and gearing up for a new single, the album title track “A Strange Education.”
