Saw her Saturday night here in Albany, NY, the first stop on her whirlwind "Another Country" tour. It was a radio gig with a live audience, the show to be broadcast on NPR stations, I would guess, later in the year. Interestingly enough, Tift decided to go solo (even though I'm pretty sure I recognized some of her band members in the audience--they probably hadn't paid up yet for the right to share a stage with her;-).

I have her two previous CDs, "Bramble Rose" and "Tambourine," and had heard a few cuts from the new CD on the radio the past few days. Her voice sounds pure in the studio.
But just wait till you see her live! The first thing I noticed (other than the fact that she looks even better live than she does on her airbrushed, soft-lit studio CD cover shots) was that she was totally in tune with her audience. There was no wall between her and us. It seemed as though she could see us all, and she certainly heard everything. At one point early in the show, a blind woman's guide dog shook himself a little and you could hear his/her dog tags clinking metallically. Well, Tift stopped her intro to the song, her eyes lit up, and she exclaimed, "Is that a dog?? There's a dog here?? That is SO cool!!! I don't think I ever performed for a dog in the audience before!"
Further along those lines, Tift decided to step out to the edge of the stage, away from the mics, for two or three songs, just to sing totally acoustic, totally unelectrified for the audience. THAT is when you can hear just how pure her voice is and how great her acoustic guitar work supports her voice and her mood.
I could say a zillion things more. We were lucky enough to get a preview here, two weeks before the real tour starts. She kept telling us, "Just remember, it all started here in Albany." Funny, she made us feel at home right in our own hometown.
Step right up and get your tickets now, folks.
