ZELOS (pr. zay-loss): Excitement of mind, ardour, fervour of spirit; ardour in embracing, pursuing, defending anything; zeal in behalf of, for a person or thing.
Creating since the summer of 2005, ZELOS is a rock band breaking on the DC music scene after finishing as the top rock act at DC's 930 club in the regional finals of the 2007 Emergenza Festival. Their unique, motifodic-rock sound is rooted in the fertile soil of a 20 year education on the timeless compositions of genius classical reportoire. The Groveman brothers form the core of this five piece and received their classical training from the Levine School of Music in Georgetown and the University of Maryland.
After years marinating in the slumberous wine and cheese parties of Washington's elite, the brother's affinity for songwriting and live performance was re-energized by the addition of an experienced drummer, lead guitarist, and jazz pianist. Oh yeah, also throw in about 2000 watts. The venues they play these days are a bit louder than the gazebo garden parties typical of their formative years. ZELOS has been described as a mixture between Coldplay, John Mayer, and The Fray but the band would submit the following criteria for the music they make:
"Whenever people ask me what kind of music I like, I've always had the hardest time answering that question. Instead of trying to spontaneously come up with an exhaustive list of art--to include Bach, Beethoven, the Beatles and Bjork--I just say, 'I'm into any music that strikes a chord of emotion common to humanity with individual originality.' That's our goal with ZELOS." - Judah Groveman
