If you Asked GodSpeed and Syn what they thought set themselves apart from the sea of upcoming MC’s they would plainly state “Everything”. “Now everybody is just saying all of the same shit. We not just different cause we spit about more then the typical rap shit, but because we can really spit hell.” With these bold feelings, GodSpeed and Syn of State of Da Union illustrate their vivid and superior penmanship on their upcoming mixtape, State of Da Union: Edition 1. State of Da Union’s lyrical dexterity is only outweighed by their unique swagger and persistent dedication to achieving greatness. GodSpeed, born Jamal Butler in West Philadelphia and Syn, Antwine Coleman of Southwest Philly, were first introduced while attending a Military school for underprivileged inner city children. “ It was hard being between home and school all the time, my moms could barely keep a roof over her own fucking head, let alone four kids, and that shit was free, you cant beat that!” Eventually I understood it was the best thing for my family” explains GodSpeed. It wouldn’t be long before they formed their rap duo, Da Union. Shortly after discovering the popularity of the name, they adjusted it to fit more closely to their ideals of rap. “Since the State of the Union address is the annual speech given by the president on the status of the country, we felt like it was our way of addressing the world on the status of rap music today.” Though State of Da Union has few accolades to add to their resume, their street savvy music has appeared on various projects and showcases including Golden girls A time to Shine showcase, Wildbunchs Reseviour Dogs mixtape, and Nick J. of No Questions solo mixtape. They have also achieved multitudes of success through online music services such as garageband.com, and Hot 97’s who’s next online.com In today’s over saturated market, very few people truly stand as leaders as stated by State of Da Union. At a time where Hip-hop seems it is desperately seeking originality, this Philly duo appears to be an obvious answer to fill the void. “Rap is in serious state of emergency to say the least, explains Syn and GodSpeed. Its not even no Hip hop no more, it’s just the industry, which is only built for making money. The same industry that’s only repackaging the same shit for profit. That’s the same reason why you only hear the same seven to eight songs playing on every hiphop/r&b station in this country. People cant help all the bullshit that’s being forced in they face by the industry, they can only adapt to the message. Its really gone take somebody with more versatile musical ability then the average rap nigga, and honestly if State of Da Union ain’t it, then its gone down right take an act of God.
