Interview with Dane of F.B.M. Ent.
By Christopher Cason
Of all the things in the world that are uncertain, change is always a given. It is defined as; to make the form, nature, content, future course, etc., of (something) different from what it is or from what it would be if left alone. Every individual on this planet has the ability to inhibit it but only a few individuals have to drive and determination to help push it.
I have known Dane of F.B.M. (Fly Boy Money ent.) before I could speak. He was always into music. I remember the train rides to school, seeing him for that 6:30 a.m. train that he was always late for. His homework might be tardy, but his headphones were always present. I leaned to him for my hip-hop knowledge and it's no surprise that he is giving his energy back to what has given him so much.
Even with the rigors that come from trying to put a label on the map, he found time to sit and answer some questions.
Chris: When did you know that music was what you wanted to do?
Dane: I've wanted to do it since I was in grammar school but I didn't get serious with it until i was 19
Chris: Describe your style to everyone?
Dane: I'm more mellow with my flow, whether it be hitting you with punch lines or telling a story
Chris: What has been the best advice you've received starting your career so far?
Dane: Networking is key and everyone is not your friend
Chris: What is the whole process like for you?
Dane: It has been crazy new doors are opening up for me every day. Its time consuming because there's something for me to do every day whether it be at the studio, out promoting, doing shows, or meetings but it's great. I love it.
Chris: Are you receiving a lot of attention so far?
Dane: Yeah the fans are giving lots of positive feedback. Me and trapp actually got a live shout out at Awdazcate's album release party while he was on stage. It was a humbling experience for me because that was his event, but he showed us love. Shout out to Awdazcate. Go pick up "Morning Coffee: The Lift" and what up Phillip Morris?
Chris: How do you see the state of music now?
Dane: it's good to me for the most part because genres are expanding and crossing over and I think that makes it better for creativity versus being stuck in one frame of mind.
Chris: Is there anything you would change about the music biz now?
Dane: I would change poor marketing on brilliant albums. lupe's(fiasco) first album was classic and didn't get the response it deserved. The same recently with Beanie Sigel and Freeway. It's January 08' and Freeways album dropped in November 07' and he just now got a video. What the fuck is up with that? Sigel had a single but I know I only heard it on the radio after 11pm on mixes and it had R. Kelly on it. Keep in mind I'm from Chicago, so if Kelly on it, I would think it would have got some more play. Quite honestly if BET didn't play it, I don't think I would have really known Sigel was about to drop.
Chris: Do you feel that comparisons in the music biz are fair/ Why?
Dane: No, because when u compare artists the lesser known artist will forever be cast in a shadow. I hate when people ask me who would I compare myself to, I'm me, nobody else.
Chris: Why should people listen to FBM music?
Dane: Because we're not on that 1 track mind frame. I could be talking about the club in one song then talking about how twisted our government is in the next. With a lot of these other rappers they have to stick to the "project mentality" they know, or they feel they won't sell. They are afraid to expand their minds and its sad
Chris: What separates FBM from others?
Dane: The 3 V's, versatility, vernacular and vision. You see record labels with a big ass posse and out of them only 2 are really any good. That's not the case over here.
Chris: Plans on the upcoming year and what do you want to say to your fans?
Dane: This year I plan to come harder and give the fans more of me versus the party joints and all that. I want them to know who I am because my experiences can help someone else out. That's why I love music because it touches people when their afraid to talk about certain things. To my fans, I love you and I won't stop.
Chris: Who are you listening to now-a-days and why?
Dane: Jay-Z, Lupe Fiasco, Coldplay, Kanye West and Fall Out boy. I'm waiting on that new Nas to drop. Really, there's too much to name because my musical taste has matured so I try and keep an open mind because that's how the best music comes out.
Growth in maturation? Who would have thought that?
F.B.M. is clearly a movement about change. Check out http://www.myspace.com/flyboymoneyent for all the latest tracks and info on the artists. They will also be performing live at the Elbo Lounge on January 26. Head on over to Eric 'sorryimachampion' Strickland or 'Tip'- Terrance 'T' Wilborn face book page for ticket info.
